Your Guide to the Best Hair Pomade

If you are new to hair pomade and aren’t sure where to begin then this post will be a crash course for all you need to know about finding the best hair pomade for your needs.

I know how hard it can be to find the right product for your hair type and style.

Many years ago when I first started using pomade I went through so many different products before I found something that worked for me. In fact, I’m still reminded by the graveyard of forgotten pomades whenever I open my cupboard.

To save you the trouble so I’ve created a list of the best hair pomade I’ve tried.

Here’s a few hairstyles that are possible through the use of pomade

Different hairstyles using best hair pomade

Oil Based Pomade

Oil based pomades are used in many classic hairstyles and have been around for decades. If you’re looking to rock a classic slickback or combover then these oil based pomades are perfect.

Best hair pomade oil

  • Perfect for classic hairstyles like the slickback and comb over
  • Fewer chemicals
  • Never dries, so you can restyle your hair throughout the day
  • Tend to be slicker
  • Tend to have more shine

  • Difficult to wash out of hair
  • May cause acne

Best Oil Based Pomades

It can be confusing to figure out which products to use and many lists on the internet have too many options. To make it easier for you I’ve narrowed it down to 3 of the best hair pomade that will get the job done!

Goon Grease ($13)

Lockhart’s Hair Pomade Goon Grease Heavy Hold 4 ounces

Goon Grease by Lockhart’s is a great product for those who are looking for a thick oil based pomade. It has a pleasant but noticeable cucumber smell that stays with you throughout the day. Unlike other thick pomades the application is very smooth and feels more like a medium or light product. It goes into the hair easily and it has a great hold that keeps your hair in shape.

This is perfect for people who are looking for a good amount of shine. It also works better than a lot of other pomades I’ve tried in the heat and I’ve found that it lasts throughout a day. It is best used for slickbacks, pompadours and side parts. It is definitely one of the best hair pomades on the market

Reuzel Pink ($12)

Reuzel Pink Grease Heavy Hold Pomade 4oz

Best hair pomade Reuzel Pink

When you open up the Reuzel Pink you will notice that it is very thick and looks like candle wax. But this product works very well for people with wavy, curly or thick hair who need something extra to keep their hair in place.

It also stays soft and has a nice fruity smell without being too overbearing. In my experience this is great for pompadours and people looking to stand out with their hairstyles.

Lockhart’s Authentic Hair Pomade Heavy Hold ($15)

Best hair pomade Lockhart's Authentic Hold

Before I start I have to say that Lockhart’s Heavy is one of the thicker pomades that I’ve tried. Unlike Goon Grease this is a true heavy pomade, it is a must for people with curly or wavy hair who have trouble keeping their hair under control. It is also easy to restyle throughout the day.

The pomade itself has a pleasant coconut scent as well. It is also more resistant to humid environments than other pomades I’ve tried. Although be warned it still has its limits

Water Based Pomade

Water based pomade is a much more recent invention compared to oil based pomades. The main ingredient is water as stated in the name. Here are some advantages and disadvantages.

water based best hair pomade

• Water Soluble (Washes out easily with water)
• Better for warm weather (dries out)
• Less chance of acne

• More expensive
• More chemicals
• Dries out through the day, difficult to restyle unless you use water

Best Water Based Pomades

Just like the oil based pomades I’ve come with a list of 3 water based pomades that will do the job.

Layrite Super Hold ($18)

Layrite Super hold Pomade, 4 oz

This is my go to water based pomade for everyday use because its perfect for thick straight hair. The hold is very strong and it lasts all day, even in warmer temperatures. There is a bit of shine when you use it but it fades throughout the day. The smell is a nice subtle vanilla.

Uppercut Deluxe (18$)

Uppercut Deluxe Pomade 3.5oz

The Uppercut Deluxe is one of my favorite go to pomades because it has a medium hold and is very durable. I can go out and play some basketball for a few hours and still have my hair stay in place.

While it is a little brittle it leaves no residue and is easy to wash out. I love the smell on this pomade because it smells like vanilla. It gives your hair a medium shine but dries out to matte.

Suavecito Firme ($14)

Suavecito Pomade Firme Hold 4 oz

When opening this jar the first thing you’ll notice is that it looks like a jar of jelly Coca-Cola. The smells is subtle and reminds me of cologne. What I love the most about this pomade is how strong the hold is. It gives my hair a medium shine and can easily get me through the day.

Like other water based pomades you can restyle it by using a little bit of water. Another great thing about this pomade is the fact that it doesn’t get into my eyes when I sweat.
