My Experiences: 5 Best Hair Products for Asian Hair

In this post, I’ll go through my personal experiences with some of the best hair products for Asian hair. If you’re like me then you’ve probably run into a hard time finding a product that can control your hair.

Compared to other hair types, Asian hair is known to be thicker and more stubborn. Even my barber has agreed that he had to learn how to cut Asian hair. These products range from low shine to high shine but the one thing they have in common is a strong hold.

I’ve also written a post about the best pomades for Asian hair. But pomade doesn’t work for all hairstyles, some people prefer other products such as wax and gels.

TIGI Bed Head B for Men Matte Separation

Best Hair Products for Asian Hair

This product is a hair wax, and unlike other hair products it doesn’t dry out so you can run your fingers through your hair to restyle it through the day.

  • Appearance – In my opinion, this is one of the best hair products for Asian hair when it comes to messy styles. It’s great because it has a matte finish which means your hair looks how it does when you just get out of bed.
  • Hold – The hold is on this is really strong and will easily last you a day out. I have no problem playing a game of basketball or going out for the night with this product.
  • Application – The wax is very stiff and a bit difficult to apply to your hair. Make sure to rub the product together in your hands to soften it before using. It is also pretty sticky so you may want to make your hair damp first as well.
  • Scent – The scent is not too noticeable, it doesn’t smell like much. For me, this is a good thing because I can’t stand it when hair products smell too strong.

Gatsby Moving Rubber Spiky Edge

Best Hair Products for Asian Hair

Gatsby is a Japanese company so they know how to make some of the best hair products for Asian hair. This is also hair wax and is good for shorter hairstyles.

  • Appearance – Love that this has little to no shine at all, and doesn’t make my hair oily or flaky.
  • Hold – Hold is very strong, perfect for thick and straight Asian hair. You can do mohawks, fauxhawks, side parts, or whatever you want with this wax. You can also rework your hairstyle throughout the day if your hair gets messed up.
  • Application – Compared to TIGI Bed Head the application on this is super easy. The wax is a lot softer so it’s easy to style and work into your hair.
  • Scent – There’s a slight fruity scent but it disappears after a short amount of time.

Sexy Hair Hard Up Gel

Best Hair Products for Asian Hair

If you prefer some shine or a wet look than hair waxes aren’t going to cut it. You’re going to need a hair gel like this.

  • Appearance – Gives your hair a wet and slick look. Great for spikes and longer hairstyles. If you want a more subtle shine, you can use less as well.
  • Hold – The hold is super firm, this will keep your hair in place. Got a 12 hour day ahead of you? No problem, this will do the job. It dries fast and unlike other gels, your hair doesn’t get any white flakes either.
  • Application – Like other hair gels, it is very easy to get into your hair and spread evenly. Haven’t had any problems with this.
  • Scent – Not much of a smell to this one, kind of a slight candyish scent but you won’t notice it after a few hours.

Gatsby Moving Rubber Wild Shake

Best Hair Products for Asian Hair

From the same company that makes the Spiky Edge, it is similar but designed for medium, instead of shorter length hairstyles. Also great for both messy and more done up styles.

  • Appearance – Similar to Gatsby’s Spiky Edge, The appearance for this is similar in many ways. There is little to no shine and has a matte finish.
  • Hold – The hold is strong enough to handle many styles and lasts for a full day. It is also reworkable like the Spiky Edge because your hair doesn’t harden or become crusty.
  • Application – The application is smooth and easy, no complaints.
  • Scent – The scent has a subtle fruity smell, it smells good and isn’t overbearing at all.

Garnier Fructis Style Manga Head

Best Hair Products for Asian Hair
Perfect for someone looking for something in between the matte finish and the wet gel look.

  • Appearance – Gives your hair a spiky done up look without too much shine, great for getting those hairstyles that look like they’re straight out of a “manga.”
  • Hold – Hold is strong and durable, it will last for most of the day and through different conditions. I’ve used it on hot days with no problems, it also dries quickly
  • Application – The texture is really soft so it is easy to style your hair. Also easy to wash off with shampoo.
  • Scent – It has a pleasant fruity smell and is one of the products with a stronger scent.

The 3 Best Pomades for Pompadours

What is the Best Pomade for Pompadour Hairstyle?

In this post, I will go through my experience for the best pomade for pompadour hairstyles.

The pompadour is a hairstyle that first became popular from the rock legend Elvis Presley. But since then it’s taken many different variations. If you’re looking for a new style then you should definitely try it.

Main Qualities of a Pompadour

  • Short on the sides
  • Lots of volume on top
  • Usually leaned on to one side

There are two types of pompadours, there is the classic style like Elvis which is defined shape by the high volume on the top.

Then there is also the modern style that can be messier and more laid back. It’s all up to you on how you want to style it.

Classic Pompadour

Modern Pompadour

My Suggestions

Lockhart’s Authentic Professional Matte Clay 3.7oz

I prefer this pomade because I like the modern pompadour style and prefer the natural look. It has a matte finish so it works well with the messy style and it’s easy to restyle through the day. Applying it is also easy compared to other clay pomades I’ve tried that tugged on my hair.

The hold on this is strong enough for a day out and it gives your hair quite a bit of volume. It also smells good without being overbearing so that’s a plus as well. It is relatively easy to wash out compared to some of the other pomades I’ve used.

Suavecito Pomade Firme Hold 4 oz

If the natural or messy look isn’t for you than Suavecito Firme makes a nice water based pomade to get you that slick and wet look. The hold is in between a medium and a strong hold, but it works well for keeping shape. This pomade is a bit better if you’re looking to do a classic pompadour.

It also doesn’t harden and become crusty like some other products so you can redo your hair throughout the day without water. To top it all of off this pomade has a great scent.
Lockhart’s Hair Pomade Goon Grease Heavy Hold 4 ounces
best pomade for pompadour

If you want to kick it old school and bring back the greaser style then put on your leather jacket and get your hands on some Goon Grease. This is an oil based pomade so you’ll definitely get the slick pompadour that others will be jealous of. It also smells pretty awesome, sort of like a pleasant cucumber scent.

It’s a thick pomade but applying is pretty easy and the hold fits its name. You won’t have any problems with keeping the shape of your hair all day. Like all oil pomades it is pretty difficult to wash off, but if you’re into that then you can leave the residue for the day after. In my experience, out of all the oil pomades, this is the best pomade for pompadour hairstyles.

Final Thoughts

In order to find the best pomade for pompadour hairstyles, you have to look for something with a strong hold because your hair has to keep up. An easy application is also important because you want to distribute the pomade evenly through your hair.

If you’re trying this hairstyle for the first time it might take a bit of practice to get it right. Everyone’s hair is different so don’t worry if you’ll find your own style.

Hope this guide for the best pomade for pompadour hairstyle helped you! Let me know what worked for you guys.

Layrite Super Hold Review

The Layrite Super Hold is one of my favorite pomades out of all the products that I’ve tried. It has become my go to pomade for everyday use because it performs great in many different areas.

First Glance

best pomade for asian hair

The first thing you notice when you open the container is the pleasant smell of vanilla. I like that the scent is not overbearing making it easy to pair with cologne. After a couple hours, the smell fades away, but don’t worry the hold will stay with you all day.

The consistency of the pomade is smooth and it is very easy to apply evenly into your hair. Many pomades with stronger holds are difficult to apply due to its thickness but that is not the case with Layrite. You’re going to want to apply this on dry hair for the maximum effect because it makes for a stronger hold. Layrite is also a water based pomade so you can use water to readjust your style throughout the day.

Layrite gives your hair a medium shine so your hair has the look of damp hair. It doesn’t give your hair the greasy slickback look but if that’s your style then this wouldn’t be the best pomade for you

It gives a strong hold that can easily last the whole day no matter what I’m doing as long as I don’t dive into a pool. I’ve played intense games of basketball, been bike riding and somehow my hair has held up. What I like about Layrite is that it does its job without being too thick or greasy.

Personally, I prefer more volume to my hair and less shine for a more casual look. The best way to do this is with the help of a hair dryer. After styling your hair set your hair dryer to low speed with high heat and gently run your fingers through your hair while blow drying it.

Final Thoughts
My current hairstyle is a comb back undercut and my preferences for a product is something with a medium shine and strong hold. Based on these qualities Layrite Super Hold is my favorite product to use. However, no pomade can be used for every situation so if you are in a similar situation than there is nothing better.
